Term 3, Week 3 | 2026

Hi Wyong Public School,

🎨 Public Education Week

It has been wonderful celebrating Public Education Week and showcasing the outstanding learning, creativity and opportunities available at Wyong Public School.

Our Kindergarten Expo provided future families with an opportunity to experience our school and learn more about the exciting journey ahead for our newest students. Our Art Show has also highlighted the incredible creativity and talent found across our classrooms, showcasing the new NSW Department of Education sample units.

Friday, families joined us for a wonderful day of community celebration. This included open classrooms, a sausage sizzle, bake sale, Art Show exhibition and an extended lunch with families.

We enjoyed welcoming parents, carers and community members into our school and celebrating everything that makes public education - and Wyong Public School - so special.

🖤💛❤️ NAIDOC Week Celebrations

Week 1, our school community proudly celebrated NAIDOC Week through a range of meaningful learning experiences and activities.

A special highlight was the reopening of our Gandu Garden, accompanied by a smoking ceremony. The garden was dedicated to Aunty Pat Bridge in recognition of her lasting contribution to Wyong Public School and the wider community. This was a significant and moving occasion, providing our students, staff and community with an opportunity to come together, reflect and celebrate the enduring impact Aunty Pat has made.

Students also participated in an engaging incursion delivered by Rumbalara, providing further opportunities to learn through culture, storytelling and shared experiences. Thank you to everyone who helped make our NAIDOC Week celebrations so meaningful for our students and community.

đź’Ż 100 Days of Kindergarten

Our Early Stage 1 and Inclusive Learning Support teachers and students recently celebrated 100 days of Kindergarten!

This wonderful milestone provided an opportunity to reflect on just how much our youngest learners have achieved since beginning their school journey. Across their first 100 days, students have developed new skills, formed friendships, embraced challenges and grown tremendously in confidence and independence.

A huge thank you to our dedicated ES1 and ILS staff for making the celebration so memorable. We are incredibly proud of our students and cannot wait to see what they achieve throughout the remainder of their first year at school.

👩‍🏫 Staffing Update

There have been several staffing changes across the school this term due to absences, illness and leave.

We appreciate the flexibility and professionalism of our staff as they step into different roles, and the resilience our students have demonstrated. Our priority remains providing consistency, strong support and high-quality learning opportunities for every student.

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Student-Parent-Teacher Night Feedback

Thank you to everyone who attended our recent Student-Parent-Teacher Night and to the families and staff who shared their feedback.

The response was overwhelmingly positive, with strong support for continuing the single-night format. Families particularly appreciated the organisation, efficiency and convenience of being able to meet with multiple teachers in one evening.

Attendance was also very encouraging, with most classes reporting between 70 and 99 per cent participation. The hall setup, ten-minute interview times, visual timer, executive support and ushers all helped the evening run smoothly.

We have also listened carefully to suggestions for improvement. Before our next event, we will consider ways to reduce noise in the hall, particularly to better support our Inclusive Learning Support students; improve the volume and visibility of the timer; clarify expectations around greeting families; and provide a short changeover period between interviews.

Based on the feedback received, we intend to continue with the single-night format while making these small logistical improvements. Thank you for helping us refine the experience and strengthen the partnership between home and school.

Thank you for your continued support of Wyong Public School. It is a privilege to serve as Relieving Principal and work alongside such a dedicated, caring and connected school community.

Warm regards,

Hannah Marler | Relieving Principal

Literacy and Numeracy Newsletter

Welcome to Term 3! What a fabulous way to kick off the term with our celebrations of learning through NAIDOC Week and Education Week. The amazing artworks on display in the hall are just part of the exciting new learning taking place in Creative Arts lessons recently.

Bringing Learning to Life Through Creative Arts

This semester, our teachers have been implementing the new NSW Creative Arts syllabus, with a focus on Visual Arts and Drama. Students have enthusiastically embraced the engaging lessons developed by the NSW Department of Education, exploring creativity, collaboration and self-expression through a range of hands-on learning experiences.

Our drama lessons have been a particular highlight, with students building confidence as they take on different roles, work together to solve creative challenges, and express their ideas through performance. It has been wonderful to see our students actively engaged, having fun and developing important communication and teamwork skills along the way.

Literacy and Numeracy Success Stories 3-6

Year 5 Spelling Success

Our Year 5 students have made encouraging progress in spelling since implementing the Triple-Word Form Theory approach.

Year 5 Highlights

  • 56% of Year 5 students are achieving Strong or above in spelling.
  • 15% of Year 5 students are achieving in the Exceeding category, which is a noticeable growth from previous years.
  • Year 5 spelling results are trending positively.

Looking Ahead

While spelling continues to be a strength for our Year 5 cohort, our next focus is to:

  • Strengthen consistency across all learners.
  • Support students to transfer their spelling knowledge confidently into all writing tasks.
  • Continue supporting teachers and monitoring student growth to ensure these positive trends are sustained.

We are proud of the progress our Year 5 students have made and remain committed to providing evidence-informed teaching that supports every learner to achieve success.

Sustained Growth in Mathematics

Our students continue to demonstrate strong and sustained growth in mathematics, with numeracy remaining one of our strongest areas of achievement across both Year 3 and Year 5.

Over the past five years, our teachers have participated in ongoing professional learning in effective teaching approaches in Mathematics. This has strengthened classroom teaching by focusing on building students' number sense, computational fluency, multiplicative thinking, and mathematical reasoning. By using evidence-based teaching strategies and developing a shared approach across the school, we are seeing positive outcomes for our students.

Year 3 Highlights

  • Numeracy is the strongest learning area for our Year 3 students.
  • 51% of students are achieving Strong or above.
  • Numeracy is also the strongest domain for our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students, with six students achieving in the Strong category.

Year 5 Highlights

  • Just over half of Year 5 students are achieving Strong or above in numeracy.
  • Six Aboriginal students are achieving in the Strong category.

These results reflect our commitment to providing high-quality mathematics instruction that helps every student develop confidence, accuracy and problem-solving skills. We are proud of the sustained growth our students have achieved and will continue to build on this success so every learner has the opportunity to thrive. Currently, our focus is on developing rich and connected daily review lessons to begin our maths teaching. This allows students to quickly retrieve the content from the previous day, ready to start the next lesson.

NAPLAN Results

NAPLAN Individual Student Reports have now been sent home with students.

If you have not received your child's report, please contact the school office so we can arrange a copy.

If you have any questions about your child's results or would like to discuss their progress, please contact your child's class teacher, who will be happy to support you.

Check In Assessment coming soon…

The Check-in assessment is a NSW Department of Education online literacy and numeracy assessment available to support schools to assess and monitor student learning for all students Years 3-6. All students complete a reading assessment and a numeracy assessment. Year 6 students will also complete a writing assessment.

The assessment can supplement existing school practices to identify how students are performing in literacy and numeracy and to help teachers tailor their teaching more specifically to student needs. The assessment will be scheduled for our Year 3 – Year 6 students between Week 6 - Week 9, Monday August 24th- Friday 18th September. The assessment will take place in the classroom at a suitable time within the assessment window. Catch up sessions will be arranged for any students who are absent on the day that class teachers implement each assessment.

K-2 Literacy and Numeracy Highlights

Our Kindergarten students are learning about the importance of ten in our number system. This is a foundational numeracy skill which builds place value knowledge in later years. A strong understanding of ten is key to understand larger numbers such as tens, hundreds, thousands and even millions.

This term we began our Maths learning with combining numbers that add together to make 10. In the classroom we call these combinations “Friends of 10”. Some students have even started to extend this knowledge to find friends of 20! How clever!

One of the easiest ways to help your child to know their friends of 10 is to say a number and ask your child to represent it using their fingers.

“Show me 7”
“How many fingers are up?” 7
“How many fingers are down?” 3
"7 and 3 are friends of 10!"

Once your child knows the number pairs that make 10 you can play uno or snap in a different way: Friends of 10 Snap!

If I turn over a 6… the pair is a 4. 6 and 4 make 10.

Year 1 Number Screening Check Results

Last term our Year 1 students completed a Number Screening Check which helped to identify students that may need further support with their foundational number skills. We are excited to welcome Mr. Noah Turner to our Learning and Support Team to deliver a targeted teaching and learning program designed to build early number skills for small groups of students three times per week. Participating students will soon bring home a postcard to advise parents of their inclusion in the program.

Year 1 Phonics Screening Check

Next week Year 1 students will participate in the annual Phonics Screening Check which is a short statewide assessment that tells teachers how your child is progressing in phonics. This screening check observes how your child can read English words with different letter combinations. Your child will sit with their class teacher and will be asked to read 40 words aloud. The test takes only about 5-7 minutes to complete for each student. During this time another teacher will continue the regular teaching and learning program with the remaining students in the class. Information on School Refusal

How do I check my child/ren's attendance?

Parents can check their child’s attendance in the Sentral Parent Portal app by following these steps:

1. Log in

  • Open the Sentral for Parents app on your phone or tablet.
  • Sign in with your registered email and password. (If you haven’t registered yet, you’ll need to use the access key provided by your child’s school to set up your account.)

2. Select the Student

  • From the home screen, choose your child’s profile.
  • If you have multiple children linked, you can switch between them.

3. Access Attendance

  • Look for the Attendance or Daily Attendance option in the menu.
  • Tap on it to view your child’s records.

4. Review Records

  • You’ll see a breakdown of absences, lateness, partial absences, and full-day attendance.
  • Many schools colour-code the entries (e.g., green for present, yellow for late, red for absent).
  • Some schools also allow you to submit explanations for absences directly in the app.

5. Notifications

  • If your school has enabled push notifications, you may also get alerts when your child is marked absent or late.
  • You can usually send an absence note via the app straight to the school.
How do I notify the school of an absence?

1. Open the App & Log In

  • Open the Sentral for Parents app.
  • Sign in with your registered details.

2. Go to the Absence Section

  • From the home screen, select your child’s profile.
  • Look for Absences, Attendance, or sometimes Notifications (the exact wording depends on your school’s setup).

3. View Unexplained Absences

  • You’ll see a list of absences marked as “Unexplained”.
  • Tap on the absence you want to explain.

4. Add Explanation

  • Enter the reason for your child’s absence (e.g., “illness”, “family reasons”).
  • You may also need to select whether it was a full day or partial absence.
  • Some schools allow attachments (e.g., medical certificates).

5. Submit

  • Tap Submit (or Send) to forward the explanation to the school.
  • The absence will then change from Unexplained to Explained once processed.

Extra Notes

  • If you can’t see the option to submit explanations, your school may only accept absence notes through phone/email.
  • You can usually also lodge future absences (e.g., family holiday) if the school has allowed this in Sentral.
How do I apply for approved leave?

1. Collect the Leave Form

  • Parents/carers need to request a leave application form from the front office.
  • This is often called an Application for Extended Leave – Travel/Exemption form.

2. Provide Supporting Information

  • The form must be accompanied by relevant details, such as:

    • Travel itinerary (if going overseas/interstate).
    • Reason for leave (e.g., family event, cultural reasons).
    • Dates the student will be absent.
  • Supporting documents (e.g., flight details, invitation letters) should be attached.

3. Submit to School

  • Return the completed form and attachments to the school office before the leave begins.
  • The school staff will record the application and pass it on to the Principal.

4. Principal’s Approval

  • The Principal must review and sign the leave application.
  • Only the Principal (not classroom teachers or admin staff) can authorise student leave.

5. Notification

  • Once approved, the office will notify parents/carers.
  • The leave is then entered into Sentral as an “Explained Leave” with the Principal’s authorisation.

âś… Key Point:
Short absences (1–2 days) can usually be explained directly through the Sentral Parent App.

Extended leave (5+ days, especially for travel) requires the formal leave application process outlined above.
