Term 1, Week 6 | 2026

As we move further into the term, it has been wonderful to see so many positive learning opportunities taking place across the school.

📸 School Photos – Friday 20 March

Our school photos will take place on Friday 20 March with MSP Photography. Families can find instructions on how to order photos in the School News section of this newsletter, including a link to the MSP ordering portal.

🦷 NSW Health Dental Van – Free Dental Care

Next term we will be welcoming the NSW Health Dental Van to our school. This is a fantastic free service providing dental checks and treatment for students. Information packs will be sent home to families soon. More details can also be found in the School News section of this newsletter.

🏏 Sporting Schools – Stage 1 Cricket

Our Stage 1 students have been participating in cricket sessions as part of the Sporting Schools program. Students have been developing their skills, teamwork and confidence while enjoying this great opportunity to try a new sport.

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 P&C Meeting – Tuesday 17 March

Our next P&C meeting will be held on Tuesday 17 March at 6:00pm in the staff room, and all families are welcome to attend. At this meeting we will be discussing a potential school bus service, tabling our 2025 Annual School Report, and showcasing a new report format designed to make student reports clearer and easier for families to understand.

📝 NAPLAN Begins Next Week

NAPLAN begins next week for our Year 3 and Year 5 students. While NAPLAN is a statewide assessment, we encourage students to approach the tests calmly and simply try their best. A huge thank you to Mrs Marler and Mrs Bath, who have been coordinating the process for our school. All assessments will be completed online, except for Year 3 writing, which remains paper-based. Families should also note that exemption letters have begun going home where applicable.

🤝 Ngara AECG Meeting

Earlier this term we hosted a Ngara AECG (Aboriginal Education Consultative Group) meeting at our school on Monday 16 February, which was very well attended by community members. As part of our Aboriginal Education Action Plan, we are currently revising Personalised Learning Pathways (PLPs) and exploring the implementation of the Sista Speak program in Terms 3 and 4.

🎓 Welcoming Rogue and Penny

We are excited to officially welcome Rogue and Penny, who have begun school-based apprenticeships with us for the next two years. Both are former students of Wyong Public School, and it is wonderful to have them back contributing to our school community while building their skills and careers.

đź’¬ Building Respect Through Restorative Practices

This year our staff are continuing to strengthen our restorative practices approach, with a focus on using affective language and statements with students. This helps students understand the impact of their actions and supports positive relationships. For example, teachers may say things like “I felt concerned when that happened because it can hurt others” or “When we speak kindly to each other, it helps everyone feel safe and included.” These conversations support students to reflect, repair relationships and make better choices moving forward.

🔍 External Validation – June 2026

This year our school will take part in External Validation, which is a process used across NSW public schools to review how effectively we are supporting student learning and school improvement. Our validation day is scheduled for Wednesday 3 June (Week 7, Term 2). During this process, a panel of experienced educators reviews evidence of our teaching, learning and school programs. It is a valuable opportunity to reflect on what we are doing well and identify ways we can continue improving outcomes for our students.

🏊‍♂️ Swimming Carnival Success

Our annual Swimming Carnival was a fantastic day filled with determination, resilience and outstanding house spirit. Despite cloudy skies and periods of rain, students embraced the conditions and gave their very best in the pool. It was wonderful to see such strong participation across all events, along with enthusiastic cheering and encouragement from peers.

A special congratulations to the students who have progressed to Zone level, an outstanding achievement and a reflection of your dedication and hard work. Further information regarding the Zone Carnival will be shared with families once it becomes available. At this stage, the carnival is scheduled for Tuesday 17 March 2026 at Woy Woy.

We also proudly congratulate Levant W on breaking two school records on the day:
🏆 200m Individual Medley
🏆 50m Butterfly

An exceptional achievement , well done!

Warm regards,

Mitchell Welham | Principal

Term 1 | Week 6

Term 1 Week 6 NEWSLETTER

NAPLAN testing commences on Wednesday 11th March for students in Year 3 and Year 5. Click the link to access key NAPLAN info for parents.  naplan-parent-carer-information.pdf

In case you missed it… earlier this week information was posted for families of our Year 3 and Year 5 students. Please see the testing schedule below:

During the testing period, Year 3 and Year 5 students will be supported by Stage 2 and 3 teachers, Learning and Support staff, Student Learning Support Officers and our APC&Is, Mrs. Marler and Mrs. Bath. The tests are scheduled to occur in the morning session and any students who are absent will catch up on missed assessments when they return to school. All assessments must be completed within the NAPLAN testing window Wednesday 11th March – Monday 23rd March.

On test days, Year 4 and Year 6 students will continue learning in classrooms with stage teachers. Students will return to regular classes in the middle session following the completion of each scheduled test.

Other Literacy and Numeracy Highlights:

Mrs Bath has loved popping in to visit our K-2 classrooms to share some fun reading and spelling activities with students and their teachers. We’ve loved using the Reading Racetrack Mat to practice phonics skills and decoding words. Some students had a try at using our special spy torches to unlock secret letters and discover hidden words to blend and decode. We even used our fly swats to find phonics and rhyming pairs.

Kindergarten have been practising listening for the beginning sounds and the end sounds in words. Our students are learning to break up words into parts and put them back together again through our Heggerty’s phonemic awareness program. It's so exciting to see their confidence grow!

In Stage 1 we have been learning to articulate phonic sounds correctly and identify voiced and unvoiced phonemes. Ask your child to show you how they feel for sounds (phonemes) made with their breath and those made with their voice box. Did you know that 44 sounds make up all the English words that we say and read?

Fun games to play at home:

I Spy is a great game to play to develop these skills. The best thing about this game is that you don’t need any equipment. You can play in the car or as you walk to school.

“I spy with my little eye, something that rhymes with… “big”.

or “I spy with my little eye, something that ends in… “n” like “nest”.

The impact of missing school

Information on School Refusal

How do I check my child/ren's attendance?

Parents can check their child’s attendance in the Sentral Parent Portal app by following these steps:

1. Log in

  • Open the Sentral for Parents app on your phone or tablet.
  • Sign in with your registered email and password. (If you haven’t registered yet, you’ll need to use the access key provided by your child’s school to set up your account.)

2. Select the Student

  • From the home screen, choose your child’s profile.
  • If you have multiple children linked, you can switch between them.

3. Access Attendance

  • Look for the Attendance or Daily Attendance option in the menu.
  • Tap on it to view your child’s records.

4. Review Records

  • You’ll see a breakdown of absences, lateness, partial absences, and full-day attendance.
  • Many schools colour-code the entries (e.g., green for present, yellow for late, red for absent).
  • Some schools also allow you to submit explanations for absences directly in the app.

5. Notifications

  • If your school has enabled push notifications, you may also get alerts when your child is marked absent or late.
  • You can usually send an absence note via the app straight to the school.
How do I notify the school of an absence?

1. Open the App & Log In

  • Open the Sentral for Parents app.
  • Sign in with your registered details.

2. Go to the Absence Section

  • From the home screen, select your child’s profile.
  • Look for Absences, Attendance, or sometimes Notifications (the exact wording depends on your school’s setup).

3. View Unexplained Absences

  • You’ll see a list of absences marked as “Unexplained”.
  • Tap on the absence you want to explain.

4. Add Explanation

  • Enter the reason for your child’s absence (e.g., “illness”, “family reasons”).
  • You may also need to select whether it was a full day or partial absence.
  • Some schools allow attachments (e.g., medical certificates).

5. Submit

  • Tap Submit (or Send) to forward the explanation to the school.
  • The absence will then change from Unexplained to Explained once processed.

Extra Notes

  • If you can’t see the option to submit explanations, your school may only accept absence notes through phone/email.
  • You can usually also lodge future absences (e.g., family holiday) if the school has allowed this in Sentral.
How do I apply for approved leave?

1. Collect the Leave Form

  • Parents/carers need to request a leave application form from the front office.
  • This is often called an Application for Extended Leave – Travel/Exemption form.

2. Provide Supporting Information

  • The form must be accompanied by relevant details, such as:

    • Travel itinerary (if going overseas/interstate).
    • Reason for leave (e.g., family event, cultural reasons).
    • Dates the student will be absent.
  • Supporting documents (e.g., flight details, invitation letters) should be attached.

3. Submit to School

  • Return the completed form and attachments to the school office before the leave begins.
  • The school staff will record the application and pass it on to the Principal.

4. Principal’s Approval

  • The Principal must review and sign the leave application.
  • Only the Principal (not classroom teachers or admin staff) can authorise student leave.

5. Notification

  • Once approved, the office will notify parents/carers.
  • The leave is then entered into Sentral as an “Explained Leave” with the Principal’s authorisation.

âś… Key Point:
Short absences (1–2 days) can usually be explained directly through the Sentral Parent App.

Extended leave (5+ days, especially for travel) requires the formal leave application process outlined above.
